Artist Statement

When a commercial fisherman offers to show us his recent catch from fishing off Ningaloo Reef, I wade right in and start asking questions - how, when, how deep, what bait, where do you sell your catch?  The beauty of these photographs for me was in the Captain's pride and joy from catching fish to feed people.  And given all these fish live down below 1000 feet deep in the pitch black darkness, I wonder how they get their brilliant colors and textures in contrast to the fisherman's hands.  That connection explains the devotion and commitment of a man to his craft.
